The Young Civic Platform is an association of young people who are actively interested in political affairs and endorse the political tradition of conservatism and classical liberalism. The association was created in January 2008 and at present has more than 40 members, who are mainly located in Prague, Brno and Hradec Králové. The chief activity of our association is the organization of educational events for public, mainly for students. Four expert groups focused on economics, political affairs, law and foreign affairs are in charge of the organization of lectures and seminars with prominent Czech politicians, economists and political scientists. By organizing various events our members develop their abilities, advance their knowledge and gain priceless experience for their future professional life. There are two main aspects of our work: educational (giving people the opportunity to meet various interesting people and deepen their political knowledge) and self-educational (teaching our members responsibility and organizational skills). The members of the Young Civic Platform also have the chance to demonstrate their writing skills and express their political beliefs by contributing their articles to our magazine „View from the Right“. Although we explicitly show our inclination for right-wing politics, we are not bound up with or dependent on any political party. This fact provides us with greater freedom in expressing our opinions irrespective of the majority public opinion and the actual political situation. From the beginning the Young Civic Platform attaches very high importance to cooperation with similarly-oriented associations, both in the Czech Republic and abroad. At home we have developed very good relations with the Center for Economics and Politics, the Liberal Institute, the Civic Institute, the Young Christian Democrats, Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, the Confederation of Political Prisoners and the Society of the Friends of the United States. The cooperation across the frontiers is very important for us. Our members took part in the seminar „Conservatism in the 21st Century: Changing Time and Persistent Values“ held in London, which was organized by the British Conservative Party. In summer 2008 two members of our organization went to Montenegro to take part in the Conservative Regional Summer School which was organized by the British Conservative International Office. During last few months we have established cooperation with the Bruges Group, a prominent British conservative think-tank. The Bruges Group invited two members of the Young Civic Platform to a prestigious dinner in the presence of Baroness Thatcher. The dinner celebrated the 20th anniversary of the famous speech of Margaret Thatcher in Bruges in 1988. Our organization has arranged many interesting projects since the time of its establishment. Two of the most important projects are the series of projections of the movies The Great Global Warming Swindle (in cooperation with the Center for Economics and Politics) and The Soviet Story (in cooperation with the Confederation of Political Prisoners). The later film reflects our strong opposition against communism. A fight against residues of communism in our country is one of the main tasks of the Young Civic Platform. In May we organized a protest against communist celebration of the former Labor Day. We invite the members of the Confederation of Political Prisoners to talk to high-school students about their horrific experience under the communist rein. In Prague the main place of our activity is the University of Economics, where we arranged lectures for students on various themes, hosting prominent politicians and economists, such as Miroslav Singer, a vice-governor of the Czech National Bank, Petr Koblic, a director of the Prague Stock Exchange, or Petr Mach, a diretor of the Center for Economics and Politics. In Brno we are active on the floor of the Faculty of Social Studies, the Faculty of Economics and Administration and the Faculty of Law of the Masaryk University. We organized a lecture about the Russian president Putin and a discussion with Miroslav Výborný, a judge of the Constitutional Court. Following our belief in economic liberalism, we remind the people about the tax burden they have to bear by organizing a Day of Tax Freedom at various places in the Czech Republic, which marks the day when people start to earn money for themselves, not for the state. At present the fundamental activity of the Young Civic Platform is related to the current development in the European Union, mainly the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty. We started a project LisabonskaSmlouva.cz, which consists of web pages that monitor the attitude of the Czech legislators to the Lisbon Treaty and caution against the negative consequences the successful ratification of the treaty would have for our citizens. We also organized a series of seminars about the Lisbon Treaty in Náchod, Prague and Brno, and it was the main theme of the conference in Mladá Boleslav, where our members had the opportunity to meet with Přemysl Sobotka, a chairman of the Czech Senate, or Ivo Strejček, a Member of the European Parliament. |
